Explanation

In this verse the heroine speaks as one who knows her heart's nature very well. From time to time the heart pretends to be angry with the lover. It makes a vow, 'If he comes, I will not speak to him at all.' But as soon as he stands before her, all that resolve melts. The heroine knows this from experience. So she says straight to her heart, 'poikkaayvu kaayddhi', 'You show feigned anger.' In this wording there is the loving teasing of a mother or a friend.

'Kalandhu unarththum kaadhalar' is a delicate phrase. The lover knows many ways to cool a quarrel. With sweet words, with a loving glance, with gracious acts he melts the heroine's anger. She knows that on seeing such a man her heart cannot hold out. The commentators take 'pulandhu unaraay' to mean 'you do not sulk and stay put until you are made to understand', that is, even before he soothes you, you yourself go and join him. This fine psychology shows Valluvar's keen eye.

In our own lives, too, we sometimes waver between real anger and acted anger. The hurt we feel toward someone we love often dissolves in a single smile of theirs. That is not weakness; it is the nature of love. But it keeps a relationship in good health not to hide real grievances and forgive everything, but to speak clearly of what is needed and settle it. The verse tells us to know the heart's nature with humour, and also to respect its true voice.

A story

Satyabhama's Sulk

This is a part of the story of the parijata tree, told in the Harivamsa, the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata.

One day the sage Narada brought a lovely parijata flower from Indra's garden and gave it to Krishna. Krishna gave it to Rukmini. When Satyabhama heard of this she was hurt. She could not bear that her husband had given that rare flower to another wife and not to her. In anger she shut herself in her room. 'If he comes, I will not speak to him at all,' she vowed to her own heart.

When Krishna came to her room she sat with her face turned away. He sat gently near her and began to speak sweet words. 'Tell me what you wish and I will bring it,' he said. She was silent for a while. Then she said, 'I want the parijata tree itself, planted in my garden.'

Smiling, Krishna seated her on his Garuda, went to Indra's world, and brought the parijata tree. When Indra opposed, a little war broke out; in the end Krishna won and planted the tree in Satyabhama's garden. The story says that when the tree flowered in her garden, its blossoms fell in Rukmini's garden also.

Whether Satyabhama's anger was real or an expression of love is a pleasant question. The truth is that her heart melted at the sight of Krishna. The anger she showed was a way of getting his love. The heart was leaning toward him all along.

As the heroine says to her heart, 'You show feigned anger,' so Satyabhama's sulk was in truth a longing for love.

To reflect on

When did you last show anger you did not truly feel, and what were you really asking for?
