Explanation

In the last verse of the chapter the heroine gives her heart a warning: 'If we still keep in our heart one who has abandoned us, we shall lose still more of our beauty.' This has a subtle conversation with the previous verse. The same woman who there reminded the heart that he is within it now warns of the price of keeping him in the heart. Love can be a comfort and can become a burden. These two verses together teach us the wisdom to tell which is comfort and which is burden.

In the phrase 'thunnaath thurandhaarai' there are two words. 'Thunnudhal' is to draw near; 'thuradhal' is to abandon. So it means one who abandoned us without drawing near. The question 'nenjaththu udaiyemaa', whether we shall hold him in our heart, carries the sense of 'do we still hold him?' and also 'is it fitting to hold him?' 'Kavin' is beauty; it includes the beauty of a body worn thin by sorrow and the glow of a faded face. The commentators see this verse as the heroine's awakening of self-respect.

In present life it sounds like mental-health advice. If we keep thinking again and again of those who have abandoned us, our body and mind wear down further. That does no harm to them; it harms only us. So we need the clarity to accept the loss and care for ourselves. It is not necessary to wipe out the memory of love completely, but we must not let it reach the state in which it destroys us. This is the mature advice with which the chapter closes.

A story

Damayanti's Plan

This is the story of a decision taken by Damayanti in the Nalopakhyana of the Mahabharata.

Abandoned by Nala in the forest, Damayanti, after many hardships, stayed in the palace of Chedi. There the queen mother gave her a place with kindness. A brahmin named Sudeva saw and recognised her, and had her sent to her father's house in Vidarbha. Reaching her father's house, Damayanti wasted away day after day thinking of Nala. The light on her face dimmed; her beauty lessened.

Her mother was distressed at her state. One day Damayanti spoke to her heart: 'If I go on grieving like this for Nala, my body and mind will wear down further. But I cannot forget him either. So I must live with the memory and yet act. I must find a way to find him.'

She asked her father and sent brahmins in many directions. She gave them a particular message to carry. 'Wherever you go, say these words in the royal courts. If anyone answers, watch his face and voice and report.' Through this plan, the Mahabharata says, news of where Nala was came to light.

Then Damayanti planned a ruse of a second swayamvara, and by it Nala came back; that is the continuation of the tale. Her firmness and wisdom prevailed in the end.

Damayanti did not give up the memory, but she did not let it destroy her. She turned to action as the way to guard her beauty. The warning that Valluvar's heroine gives her heart says the same.
