Explanation

The very first verse of this chapter is a complete metaphor. A woman's heart is like a house; restraint is the door of that house; and the bolt that fastens the door is modesty. In this way her heart is guarded in two layers. But desire is like an axe. It does not open the bolt; it breaks the door itself. The image has two subtleties: desire comes as a forceful attack, not a gentle entrance, and restraint and modesty, though firm, are breakable as a door and bolt made by hands are.

'Kanichchi' is an axe or battle-axe, a symbol of strength in Tamil tradition. The commentators admire the arrangement in which restraint is the door and modesty the bolt. Some also see 'nirai' as a kind of guarding, the heart's self-protection. Whichever way we take it, what breaks is a form of control. In this verse the heroine blames no one; she states the strength of desire as a general truth. So there is neither regret of defeat nor pride of victory in her voice, only a clear understanding.

We know this in our own lives. However firm the rules we hold, there are moments when the heart overrides them all. At those moments, instead of rebuking ourselves, it is maturity to understand the strength of feeling and act with the responsibility that goes with it. Rather than blaming ourselves for a broken door, the important question is how to nurture in a good way what lies within. In one verse Valluvar shows both the nature of the heart and the limit of human beings. It may be called the gateway of this chapter.

A story

Sundarar and Paravai at Tiruvarur

This is the beginning of the story of Sundaramurti Nayanar and Paravai Nachiyar from the Periya Puranam, the account of the Nayanmars.

Sundarar, born in the Adisaiva line, was a devotee of Shiva claimed by the Lord himself. When he came to the Tyagesar temple in Tiruvarur for darshan, he saw a woman named Paravai who was gathering flowers in the temple. Paravai served the Lord Tyagesar and was full of beauty, devotion and reserve. On seeing her Sundarar's heart was drawn. She too saw him. In both hearts a new stirring arose that day.

Paravai had kept her nirai well. She had never before looked up at any man. With the bolt of modesty she had fastened the door of her heart tightly. But after she saw Sundarar the bolt loosened. Her thought of him would not rest. Even while worshipping the Lord in the temple her mind circled around him. She scolded herself, but could not remove the thought.

Sundarar too knew the state of his heart and was troubled. He went to the temple and prayed to Lord Tyagesar, 'Grant that I may wed this woman.' His devotion was true and his love pure. The Periya Puranam says the Lord favoured him with grace and made love shine in Paravai's heart also.

Their marriage was completed by divine grace. Their life afterwards passed through many trials. Sundarar sang the Lord all his life. Paravai's love and service stood by him.

Here Paravai's nirai gave way to love without fault and with divine grace; so that love stayed on the path of devotion. The axe of desire and the bolt of modesty that Valluvar speaks of fit this event beautifully.

In Sundarar we see the quality of directing pure love in a way worthy of divine grace. Love directed so changes the breaking of restraint into something unblemished.

To reflect on

When a strong feeling has broken through your usual restraint, how can you direct it toward something worthy?
