Explanation

A small drama is played out in this verse. The heroine sets out firmly, saying, 'Today I shall sulk.' Perhaps her beloved came late, or there is some other grievance. But before she even sees him, her heart is ready to mingle with his. Seeing that heart, she gives up the sulk and embraces him. 'Pulappal' means 'I shall show displeasure'; 'pullinen' means 'I embraced'.

The phrase 'kalaththal uruvathu kandu' is taken in two ways. One is: seeing that my heart was hastening to mingle with him. The other: seeing that his heart was hastening to mingle with mine. The first sense is found in most commentaries. Her humorous admission is that her heart did not obey her and had gone ahead.

We too often plan a grievance firmly, and then at the sight of a loving face it melts away. At such moments it is better to accept the truth of our love than to blame ourselves. Here Valluvar shows, with charm, the thin boundary between sulking and union. It also serves as a foretaste of the later chapter on the joy of lovers' quarrels. The verse is full of self-aware laughter: she is both the one who set out to sulk and the one who watches herself fail, and she enjoys both roles equally, which is the quiet gift of akam poetry.

A story

Satyabhama's Displeasure

This is a part of the Parijata story told in the Vishnu Purana and the Harivamsa.

Among the wives of Krishna, Satyabhama was full of love and self-respect. One day the sage Narada brought a Parijata flower from the world of the gods and gave it to Krishna. The news reached Satyabhama that Krishna had given it to Rukmini. Her heart was hurt.

She went into the chamber of displeasure and resolved, 'I shall not speak to him any more; when he comes I shall turn my face away.' She took off her ornaments and sat on the floor. She thought of many ways to show her displeasure.

When Krishna came there, she remembered her plan. But in the very moment she saw him, her heart melted. When Krishna said sweetly, 'I shall bring the whole Parijata tree,' her displeasure left her and she bloomed into a smile toward him. The Puranas then tell that he brought the tree from the world of the gods and planted it in her courtyard.

Though Satyabhama went planning a sulk, her heart was already ready to mingle. Just as Valluvar's heroine says 'I went saying I would sulk; I embraced him', this too is a sweet defeat of love.

The story shows with relish how short-lived anger is among those who love.

Vaishnava tradition also sees in this the Lord's willingness to receive even a devotee's displeasure as love.
