Explanation

The heroine playfully calls her beloved a 'thief'. He does not steal goods; he steals her heart. 'Pal maya' means one who knows many wiles. The weapon in his hand is not a sword but humble, honeyed words. She declares that by these alone the guard of her womanly reserve is broken. The word 'patai' brings the language of war into the world of love. In the earlier verse desire came as an axe; here gentle speech comes as an army.

The commentators explain 'penmai' as the cluster of qualities such as modesty, reserve and gentleness. A few take it simply as 'nirai'. The sweetness of this verse lies in the fact that she says this not as an accusation but as an affectionate complaint. She knows he is a trickster; still she melts at his soft and humble speech.

In life we hear many kinds of speech. Honeyed, humble words win us over more easily than harsh commands. That may be for good or for ill. This verse points to the power of speech. A quiet hint in it may be that we need the alertness to sense the charm of sweet words and to tell the true from the false in them. Yet the verse is not bitter. It is the smiling voice of a woman who knows exactly what has happened to her and tells it with delight.

A story

The Sweet Speech of the Butter Thief

This is a part of the story of Krishna and the gopis from the Bhagavata Purana.

In Vrindavan, Krishna was called the 'butter thief'. The Puranas tell that he stole butter from the houses of the cowherds and that his mother Yashoda scolded him on seeing it. But devotees understand that he truly stole the hearts of the gopis.

On an autumn night, when the moon shone bright, Krishna played his flute on the bank of the Yamuna. Hearing the music, the gopis left their household tasks and ran to him. When they arrived, Krishna spoke in sweet and humble words: 'Why have you come to the forest at night? Your families will worry; go back.' So the Bhagavata says.

The gopis were grieved by this gentle speech. 'Our hearts have already taken refuge in you; do not drive us away,' they pleaded with humility. At last he accepted them and joined them in a dance of music in the night, which is called the Rasa Lila.

Vaishnava devotees take this not as worldly love but as a metaphor for the quest in which the soul and the Lord unite. Even so, the power of speech shows clearly in this story.

When Valluvar's heroine says 'the humble speech of the thief of many wiles', and when the gopis melted at Krishna's sweet words, both show in the same way the strength of gentle speech.
