Investigation in forming Friendships

Natpaaraaidhal

This chapter teaches that friends must be examined carefully before they are accepted, because a bond once formed cannot easily be undone. One should test character, family, faults and company, avoid fools and those who desert in distress, and seek the spotless.

Introduction

In the chapter on Friendship we heard of the greatness of friendship. In this chapter on Examining Friends, Valluvar turns to the next question: how to choose the person who deserves such a bond. If friendship is the dearest of relations, great care is needed before it is formed. Placed in the Natpiyal, this chapter gives the tests of selection once the definition of friendship is known.

The first two verses give a stern warning. Nothing causes more harm than making friends without testing them, for once the friendship is made it is not easy to throw it off. One who does not examine again and again will in the end suffer sorrow to the point of ruin. The next two verses show what to examine: character, family, faults, and the company one keeps. The friendship of one of good lineage who shrinks from blame is worth gaining even at a price.

The fifth and sixth verses name the marks of a good friend. Choose the one who can rebuke you until you weep and who knows the ways of the world. Adversity, says the sixth, is the measuring rod which tells us who our kinsmen are. The seventh and eighth verses say what to avoid: leaving the friendship of fools is itself a gain; one should not even think of deeds that shrink the spirit, nor accept the company of those who cut off support in distress.

The ninth verse speaks of a bitter truth. Friendship with those who abandoned us in ruin burns the heart even when we only remember it. The last verse gives clear guidance: take hold of the friendship of the faultless even by giving something, and give up the friendship of the unworthy. Valluvar is not restricting friendship; he is placing a guard to protect it.

The method Valluvar advises is not suspicion but wisdom, like a farmer who studies the soil, the season and the water before he sows. Having sown, he cannot save the crop from flood or drought; likewise, a wrong friendship wastes years of love and trust. The chapter also turns the measure back on us: one who tests others must be ready to be tested, and ask whether his own character gives friends a reason to trust him.

In our time many 'friends' are found within a few seconds on a website, but it takes years to know their character, family and faults. The chapter teaches that patience. It does not spread distrust; because good friends are rare, it teaches us to recognise them and honour them.

Chapter story

Rama Receives Vibhishana

This scene comes from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana insulted his younger brother Vibhishana in open court and drove him out, because Vibhishana had advised him to return Sita. Grieved, Vibhishana crossed the sea with four ministers and came to Rama's camp. Standing in the air, he announced, "I am Ravana's brother. I have come seeking your refuge."

The vanara army was in uproar. Sugriva doubted him. "He is Ravana's brother, a relative of the enemy; he may have come as a spy. We should not accept him," he said. Some of the vanara chiefs said the same. Rama listened to every opinion. This was the beginning of examination before accepting a friend.

While Vibhishana waited, the mood in Rama's camp was tense. Sugriva repeated his caution again and again. Angada, Jambavan and Sarabha each offered their opinion. Some wanted him kept under guard for a few days before being accepted; others wanted him received at once. Rama listened patiently until each had finished. He knew that listening is itself a kind of examination.

When Vibhishana spoke in his own defence his voice trembled. "I told my brother to his face that what he did was not dharma. I told him Lanka would be saved if Sita were returned. He would not listen. It was not kinship that bound me; it was my sense of right that brought me here." Rama looked straight into his eyes. There was fear in them, but no deceit. He knew that eyes do not lie.

Hanuman spoke calmly. He pointed out that this man had grown weary of Ravana's wickedness and had come trusting Rama's goodness; that it was not right to reject him just because he was the enemy's brother; and that there was no deceit in his words or his face. He examined the man's character, speech and action and reported it.

Rama gave his decision: "I shall give protection to anyone who comes to me seeking refuge, whoever he is. That is my vow," as tradition has it. Yet he did not ignore Sugriva's doubts. He had Vibhishana brought in, and accepted him fully only after seeing him.

Later Vibhishana proved his honesty. He told Rama truthfully of Ravana's war plans and the secrets of Lanka. After the war Rama made him king of Lanka.

The story shows the value of forming friendship after examination. When Sugriva's caution, Hanuman's insight and Rama's resolve came together, a false trust was avoided and a true friend was not lost.
