Poverty

Nalkuravu

This chapter shows poverty as a bitter affliction that eats away a person's dignity, lineage, the weight of his words and even his sleep. By telling the plain truth about its cruelty, Valluvar reminds everyone of the shared duty to relieve it.

Introduction

The fifth chapter of the Kudiyiyal, Nalgurāvu, speaks of one of the hardest truths Valluvar saw. The previous chapter praised farming. Even with that labour, wealth does not come to everyone; some meet poverty. Valluvar sets out the real face of poverty here without sparing words, yet with compassion. He does not despise the poor; he despises the cruelty of poverty. When he calls it a 'sinner', he means to stress that it is an evil to be fought.

The first verse is almost a riddle: what is more bitter than poverty? Poverty of poverty itself, that is, poverty that goes on being poverty with no way of escape. The second calls poverty a 'sinner' that deprives one of both this world and the next. Verses three and four show that it spoils family tradition and gentle speech, and drives even the high-born to speak lowly words.

Verses five and six say that a thousand miseries lie hidden within poverty, and that however fine the poor man's words, they lose weight. Verse seven describes the pitiable state where even the mother who bore him looks on a person in vice-linked poverty as a stranger. Verse eight is a sigh that every day poverty returns with the same cruelty. Verse nine gives a shocking comparison: one might sleep even amid fire, but not in poverty. The last verse, at poverty's extreme, speaks of the misery of being unable even to give up life, a death sentence upon one's salt and gruel. Thus the chapter lists the cruelty of poverty step by step.

Valluvar's view of poverty has a subtlety. He does not call it fate or punishment; he shows it as a social misery. There is no suggestion in him that the poor suffer for their own faults. He works with the word 'inmai', lack, and lists the great losses that lack brings about. Commentators such as Parimelazhagar take the chapter as a section which, by stating the nature of poverty, urges the wealthy to take up charity.

Reading these verses we may ask why Valluvar dwells on such harshness. The answer lies in the earlier chapters. The cruelty of poverty is the reason why giving, labour and raising a family matter. Only those who know poverty feel the worth of charity. The Hindu tradition also calls annadanam the highest dharma. Even in today's world, when a family climbs out of poverty, the life of a whole generation changes.

Chapter story

Ilaiyankudi Maranar

This is the life of Ilaiyankudi Mara Nayanar told in the Periya Puranam. In the village of Ilaiyankudi in the Chola country lived Maranar, a wealthy farmer. He owned land and riches, and was a man who always welcomed Shiva devotees and fed them. He and his wife made this service the purpose of their lives.

The Purana says the Lord wished to test his devotion. Over time Maranar's wealth began to dwindle. He borrowed to feed devotees. He sold his land. At last he became poor. Yet he never stopped his service of hosting devotees.

One rainy-season night the rain fell without a break. There was no rice at home, no money, nothing at all. Maranar and his wife had gone hungry the whole day. At midnight a voice sounded at the door: a Shiva devotee had come, drenched in the rain and hungry.

Maranar invited him in and seated him. But the grief of having no food weighed on him. He asked his wife, "What can we do for this devotee?" She thought and said, "The seed paddy sown in our field this morning must have floated in the rain and gathered along the bund. Go and gather it."

Maranar walked in the dark and the rain, scooped up the floating seed paddy into a basket and brought it home. His wife pounded it into rice. She plucked greens from the kitchen garden. But the firewood was all soaked by the rain. There was nothing to light the hearth.

Without hesitation she pulled old rafters from the roof of their hut and burned them in the hearth. They cooked rice, sautéed the greens and prepared the meal. When Maranar went to call the devotee to eat, no one was there; in the sky full of light Lord Shiva appeared with Goddess Uma.

The Lord said, "We have seen your devotion. You and your wife shall live always in our world." The Purana adds that their house was filled with wealth.

That night they fully felt the cruelty of poverty: hunger, rain, darkness, having to burn the roof itself. Yet they did not let go of dharma in poverty. When Valluvar calls poverty a 'sinner', it is to show its cruelty, and the greatness of those who do not give up dharma in that cruelty only rises.

Think more deeply of that night. Maranar's body shivered in the rain, hunger gnawed at him and the roof leaked. Yet his one thought was that the guest must not go away hungry. He counted another's hunger greater than his own suffering. His wife shared the same heart; her readiness to burn even the roof shows that a household is a penance performed by two together.

The tale gives one more message, compassion for the poor. As Maranar gave to others even in poverty, those who know the harshness of poverty come forward to help.
