Explanation

Here Valluvar names two precious things that poverty destroys: tholvaravu and thol. 'Tholvaravu' is the ancient lineage, the qualities a family has guarded generation after generation. For 'thol' commentators differ: some take it as 'sol', speech, gentle and sweet; others as learning, what has been studied. Either way, it is a mark of a person's refinement.

How does poverty ruin them? It is a known truth that when hunger comes, manners fly. A hungry man gets angry, speaks harshly, and begs, giving up his dignity for help. The family tradition built over generations breaks in the hunger of one generation. It is not the poor man's fault but the cruelty of poverty. The word 'thogaiyaaga', all together, is also noteworthy. Poverty destroys not one after another but all at once. Lineage, language and esteem are struck together. So its effect reaches not only a person's wealth but his very identity.

Reading this verse we can draw two lessons. First, when we see the harsh speech or wrong conduct of someone in poverty, we should not scorn them at once but feel the suffering behind it. Second, those who try, even in poverty, to keep their tradition and gentle speech deserve the highest praise. In our tradition there have been many who guarded good character even in poverty. Valluvar here tacitly blesses them.

A story

The Year Incognito

This is the Pandavas' year of living incognito from the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata. After twelve years in the forest, the Pandavas had to live one more year without being recognised. They joined the palace of Virata, king of Matsya, as servants.

Yudhishthira became Kanka, the king's counsellor and companion at dice. Bhima became Vallabha, a cook. Arjuna became Brihannala, teaching dance to the palace women. Nakula became a horse-keeper, Sahadeva a cowherd, and Draupadi the maidservant Sairandhri.

At Indraprastha kings had bowed before them; now they had to serve others. They had to hide their names and lineage and speak in lowly words. Draupadi especially, once an empress, lived as a maid waiting upon a queen's orders.

All that year their royal tradition and gentle speech stayed hidden. Even as the family's ancestral glory disappeared before their eyes, they guarded it in their hearts. It was a compelled condition, yet everyone felt the weight of the loss.

The word poverty does not appear directly in this part. But being stripped of royal wealth and esteem and labouring for daily food at others' mercy shows well the character of want. It was a state that set aside family tradition and gentleness of speech for a time.

When the year ended they regained their identity. Their lineage had not died; it had slept within. The account shows that however hard poverty or crisis may be, one who keeps tradition in the heart can rise again.
