Explanation

Valluvar first sets down an impossible state and then says the sorrow of poverty is more cruel still. That one might sleep in the midst of fire is a figure of speech; that sleep does not come in the sorrow of poverty is the heavier truth. Sleep is not only a need of the body but the place where the mind finds peace. Poverty takes away that peace itself.

Worries where tomorrow's food will come from, how to clear the debt, how to meet the children's needs, toss the mind all night. Fire burns the body; poverty burns the mind. When the mind is burning, how can the eyes close? That is the subtlety of the verse. What we learn is that we must not dismiss the suffering of the poor with 'they are used to it'. Their nights are sleepless too. A job, a chance at education or a kind word that lessens their worry can give their sleep back.

Commentators take the ending 'aagum' of the first line as 'it may perhaps be'. The idea is that even if someone might sleep in fire, none sleeps in poverty. It is a hyperbole to show the height of the sorrow. The Purana says Prahlada stayed calm amidst fire by divine grace; only with such devotion is calm possible in fire, whereas in poverty it is not easy even then.

A story

The Nights of Kuchela

This is the story of Kuchela, also called Sudama, from the tenth canto of the Bhagavata Purana. Sudama was a poor brahmin and a friend who had studied with Krishna in the gurukula of the sage Sandipani. After Krishna became king of Dwaraka, Sudama and his wife were wasting with hunger.

At night the children cried with hunger. His wife, sleepless, gently pleaded with him, 'Is your friend Krishna not in Dwaraka? Go and see him.' That night passed sleepless for both.

Sudama first hesitated. Thinking it improper to go empty-handed, his wife borrowed four handfuls of beaten rice and tied them in a torn cloth. He took it and went to Dwaraka.

Seeing his boyhood friend Krishna ran and embraced him. With his own hands he washed his feet. Queen Rukmini fanned him. Sudama tried to hide the beaten rice he had brought; Krishna asked for it and ate a handful. As he reached for a second, Rukmini held his hand and stopped him, the Bhagavata says.

Sudama never opened his mouth to ask for what he had come for; he stayed with love and took leave. On the way back his heart was troubled. But on reaching his town he saw a grand mansion standing where his hut had been.

His nights now became peaceful. The fire of hunger was quenched. The sleepless night of poverty ended by the grace of friendship.
