Explanation

This verse is very well known in Tamil life. A mother's joy on the day her child is born is very great. But Valluvar says that greater still is the moment when she hears the world call her son 'saandror'.

'Saandror' means one full of good qualities, a great and cultured person. There is a whole chapter in the Kural named 'saandraanmai'. The one with that quality is a saandror.

'Eendra pozhudhu' is the moment that holds both the pain of childbirth and the joy that follows. That joy is great; but it came by nature. The name 'saandror' was gained by labour and character; when she hears it, the mother's fullness is deeper still.

Notice also the word 'ketta', heard. The mother did not see it with her own eyes; she heard it from others. She does not praise her son herself; society praises him. The certificate given by others is the highest joy for the mother.

To read this verse as meaning only a male child is a narrow view. The word 'magan' is the usage of that time. Today daughters too become saandror and give their mothers the same joy. The feeling of the verse applies to all children.

It also says that the best gratitude children can show their mothers is not to give wealth but to live so that neighbours praise them.

A story

The Word Heard on the Temple Verandah

This is an invented story. In a small village near Madurai a widow named Meenakshi Ammal raised her son Sundaram by hard work. She spun cotton and sold idlis to keep the family going. Sundaram studied and went to a small job in a distant city.

Years passed. During a festival in the month of Aadi, Meenakshi Ammal went to the temple. As she sat on the verandah, two old men near her were talking. They did not know her. One said, "Last month the floods swept away all the huts on our river bank. A young man came from the city, gave half his salary, and stayed there day and night to help. They said his name was Sundaram."

The other nodded: "Yes, I heard his mother is Meenakshi. There is no pride in his speech. If anyone is to be called a 'saandror', it is he."

Meenakshi Ammal said nothing. Her eyes filled with tears. She thought: the day Sundaram was born was a great joy; the day he took his first step was a joy; the day he topped his class was a joy. But the word 'saandror', heard from strangers at this place, touched the depths of her heart.

That night Sundaram came home. His mother asked him nothing. She served him food and then quietly stroked his head. "Amma, what is it?" he asked. "Nothing, kanna. At the temple I heard what sort of man you are," she said.

Sundaram did not understand. But he felt the fullness in his mother's hands. That day Meenakshi Ammal received a joy that the day of his birth had not given.
