Explanation

The last verse of the chapter speaks of the son's duty. Verse 67 said what the father's duty is; this one gives the son's. Put together, the two give the whole picture of bringing up a child.

The help a son does his father is not only to give wealth or service; it is to live in a way the world admires. 'Ivan thandhai en notraan kol' is the world's expression of wonder. It praises the father on seeing the son's good qualities.

'Notraan' means one who performed a vow, one who did penance. In the Hindu tradition there is a belief that to gain a good child is the fruit of earlier penance. Valluvar uses that belief here. The world, seeing a good son, says of itself, 'His father must have done great penance.'

In this help the son has no expense, but the effort is great. The effort is to do every act of his life in a way that guards his father's name.

In the previous verse the mother hears the word 'saandror'; here the father hears the word 'en notraan'. What gives joy to both parents is the character of the child.

We may take this not merely as pride but as a responsibility. The awareness that our acts bring honour or blame not only to us but also to those who raised us will make us live well.

In the Pandharpur tradition, the service Pundalika rendered to his parents is a living picture of this verse.

A story

Pundalika and the Brick

The Vaishnava tradition of Pandharpur honours the story of Pundalika. Tradition says that in the beginning Pundalika neglected his parents. After marriage he lived with his wife and did not look after his aged parents. When they set out on a pilgrimage to Kashi, he and his wife went along, but on the way he made his parents do the service while they rode on horses.

On the way they stayed at the ashram of the sage Kukkuta. At night Pundalika saw three women in dirty garments cleaning the ashram. He learned that they were the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati. "You come to wash away the sins of the world. Why this dirt on you?" he asked. They said, "Sinners like you bathe in us, and it comes to us. But here, through the service of the sage to his mother and father, we are cleansed."

These words broke Pundalika's heart. His mind changed, he fell at his parents' feet and begged forgiveness. From that day he gave his whole life to serving them.

His service became known to the world. One day Krishna came from Dwaraka to Pundalika's house and knocked at the door. Pundalika was then pressing his father's feet. Knowing that the Lord stood at the door, he did not stop his service; he threw a brick outside and said, "Stand on this and wait."

Krishna stood on that brick with his hands on his hips. Pundalika finished his service, came out, saw the Lord's beautiful form and bowed. The Lord, praising his service, stayed on at Pandharpur as Vitthala, says the tradition.

Pundalika is a son of whom even the Lord could say, "What penance did his father do?" The image of Vitthala standing on a brick even today speaks of the glory of service to parents.
