The Wealth of Children

Pudhalvaraip Perudhal

This chapter says that the greatest gain in life is children of wisdom and good character. Valluvar speaks of the joy of children's touch and prattle, of the duties of father to son and son to father, and of the honour that a worthy child brings to his parents.

Introduction

The last verse of the chapter on the worth of a wife called the gain of good children the ornament of the home. This chapter, 'Gaining Children', spreads that idea out. The word 'peru' means both obtaining and grace. In Tamil tradition there is a deep feeling that a child is not gained by a family's effort alone but is also a gift of God's grace. That is why Valluvar calls a child a 'peru'. When he says 'makkal' in general, he means children of both sexes.

In this chapter Valluvar speaks in three directions. First, the gain that children bring to parents: there is no gain greater than a child of understanding (61), a good child keeps blame and evil away (62), and children are one's true wealth (63). Then the joy that comes from children's love: the porridge stirred by small hands is sweeter than nectar (64), a child's touch is joy to the body and a child's speech joy to the ear (65), and their prattle is sweeter than flute and lute (66). Last come the duties on both sides: the father must make his son sit in the front place of the assembly (67), and the son must live so that the world asks what penance his father did (70). Between them are verses on learning and on a mother's joy (68, 69).

Commentators differ in places. For 'ezhu pirappu' in verse 62, Parimelazhagar takes it as many births, while some say seven generations. In verse 63 there are also differences about whose wealth 'avar porul' means. In any case the central idea is clear: a child is not only a family's future but the proof of its character.

These ideas fit well with the epics and Puranas of the Hindu tradition. Dhruva, who brought honour to his mother and himself; Prahlada, through whom his whole line was purified; Ashtavakra, whose learning delighted his father; and Pundalika, who served his parents, are living commentaries on this chapter. The lesson that to raise a child well is a greater gain than to bear one sounds through all of them.

For the reader today this chapter is a reminder. A child's success is not measured by marks or income but by learning, humility and love. In the same way the success of parents lies not in laying up wealth for the child but in making the child good. Even those without children can gain this blessing by guiding the young around them.

Chapter story

Dhruva and Suniti

The fourth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Dhruva. King Uttanapada had two wives, Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti's son was Dhruva, and Suruchi's son was Uttama. The king showed more affection to Suruchi. Suniti lived quietly and humbly.

One day the five-year-old Dhruva ran, wishing to sit on his father's lap. As he tried to climb onto the lap where Uttama sat, Suruchi spoke harshly: "You were not born of my womb. If you want to be fit for this lap, pray to the Lord Hari and do penance, and by His grace be born of my womb." The king said nothing.

Dhruva ran to his mother weeping. Suniti took him in her arms and wiped his tears. "My son, do not blame anyone. There is a truth in what she said. The feet of the Lord are a greater place than your father's lap. Seek them," she said. Swallowing her own pain, she showed her son the way.

Dhruva set off alone for the forest. On the way the sage Narada met him and tried to send him back home. He refused firmly. Narada taught him the mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' and the way of doing penance at Madhuvana on the bank of the Yamuna.

Dhruva practised severe austerity. At first he ate once in a few days, then only leaves, then only air. The heat of his penance troubled the world. Lord Vishnu appeared before him. Dhruva could not speak. The Lord touched his cheek with His conch, and at once Vedic knowledge arose on his tongue and he sang His praise.

The Lord granted him kingship and afterwards the abiding place of the Pole Star. Dhruva went home. King Uttanapada, realising his fault, ran and embraced his son in remorse. Suniti rejoiced at the sight of her son. The words she had planted had borne fruit.

Dhruva ruled justly for many years and was then established in the Pole Star. That star, which stands unmoving in the sky even today, is a witness to a mother's consoling words and a boy's resolve.

The Bhagavata develops this story at length, and each part of it, Dhruva's austerity, the trials he met in the forest and the vision of the Lord, underlines the boy's strength of will. The central message here is that one mother's consoling word changed a child's whole life.

Dhruva too behaved humbly after his success. The Bhagavata says that his heart was not satisfied by the boon the Lord gave, and that he was ashamed when he remembered his childhood anger. He accepted his stepmother and his brother with love, as a good child would.
