Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth CantoBhrigu's Kick and Vishnu's Reply
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto. To learn which of the Trimurti was the greatest, the sages sent the sage Bhrigu. Bhrigu first tested Brahma and then Shiva, and both grew angry.
At last Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha and kicked Vishnu on the chest as he reclined with Lakshmi. Vishnu did not grow angry. He rose, bowed and said, "Welcome, sage! I did not know you had come. Did your tender foot hurt from striking my hard chest?" and he gently pressed the sage's foot.
Though he had every right to rebuke him, the Lord chose gentleness. Moved to tears by that patience, Bhrigu declared to the sages, "He is the greatest of all."
