Srimad Bhagavatam, Sixth CantoThe Gift of the Sage Dadhichi
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Sixth Canto. The great asura Vritra terrorised the worlds, and none of the gods' weapons could defeat him. Vishnu told them that only the vajra, made from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, could overcome him.
Hesitantly, the gods went and asked Dadhichi. The sage smiled: "This body will perish one day anyway. What could be better than for it to serve the world?" He sat in yoga and gave up his body.
From his bones Vishvakarma fashioned the vajra, and with it Indra defeated Vritra. Dadhichi, who made even his body belong to the world, is the highest example of living for others.
