Kunamathu kaivitael

Meaning

Never abandon good character.

Word by word

good character, virtue
do not abandon

Explanation

Never abandon good character, in any situation. Wealth and position may go; if character goes, the person himself is gone.

Character is tested only when hardship comes. The fame of one who does not let go of honesty even then lasts through the ages.

Markandeya Purana

Harishchandra, King of Truth

From the Markandeya Purana. Harishchandra, king of the solar dynasty, was famed for truth. To test him, Vishvamitra asked for his whole kingdom as a gift, and Harishchandra gave it without hesitation. Then the sage demanded the fee owed on that gift.

To pay it, Harishchandra sold his wife Chandramati and his son Lohitashva, and sold himself as a slave to a keeper of the cremation ground. When his son died of a snakebite, Chandramati carried the body to the cremation ground. Even then Harishchandra kept to his duty and would not allow the cremation without the fee.

At that moment the gods and Vishvamitra appeared; the son was restored to life and the kingdom returned. Harishchandra, who lost everything yet never let go of truth, remains forever the image of never abandoning one's character.
