Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 9Ambarisha's Vow
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. King Ambarisha kept the Ekadashi vow wholeheartedly and without fail. Once, at the end of a year-long observance, he had to break his fast on Dvadashi at the proper hour. Just then the sage Durvasa arrived as a guest, went to bathe and did not return for a long time.
Eating without the guest would be wrong; not ending the vow on time would also be wrong. On the advice of the brahmins, Ambarisha took only a sip of water to end the fast. Durvasa returned in a rage and hurled a fiery demon at him.
But Vishnu's discus, the Sudarshana, destroyed the demon and chased Durvasa. Finding refuge nowhere, Durvasa finally begged Ambarisha's forgiveness. Ambarisha, who had waited a whole year without food for his return, prayed sincerely, and the discus was pacified. The wholeheartedly kept vow protected the king.
