Naeraa noanpu seeraakaathu

Meaning

A fast kept half-heartedly bears no fruit.

Word by word

a vow not kept wholeheartedly
bears no fruit

Explanation

A vow not kept wholeheartedly and properly, says Avvaiyar, bears no fruit. If we perform only the outward rituals while the heart is elsewhere, it is not a vow but a show.

The life of a vow lies in its purpose: purifying the mind, remembering God and giving to others.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 9

Ambarisha's Vow

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. King Ambarisha kept the Ekadashi vow wholeheartedly and without fail. Once, at the end of a year-long observance, he had to break his fast on Dvadashi at the proper hour. Just then the sage Durvasa arrived as a guest, went to bathe and did not return for a long time.

Eating without the guest would be wrong; not ending the vow on time would also be wrong. On the advice of the brahmins, Ambarisha took only a sip of water to end the fast. Durvasa returned in a rage and hurled a fiery demon at him.

But Vishnu's discus, the Sudarshana, destroyed the demon and chased Durvasa. Finding refuge nowhere, Durvasa finally begged Ambarisha's forgiveness. Ambarisha, who had waited a whole year without food for his return, prayed sincerely, and the discus was pacified. The wholeheartedly kept vow protected the king.

To reflect on

Could you keep a fast or practice you follow with your whole heart this time?
