Explanation

Even if it is something as good as milk, says Avvaiyar, take it only at the right time and in the right way. Even a good thing can harm at the wrong time. Eating with attention to hunger, measure and time is the basis of health.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: the body needs no medicine if one eats only after the previous meal is digested (Kural 942).

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Upamanyu's Lesson

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Upamanyu, a disciple of the sage Dhaumya, tended his teacher's cows. Seeing him grow plump, the teacher asked what he was eating. One by one the teacher forbade him: eating alms without offering them first to the teacher, drinking the cows' milk without leave, and even drinking the froth the calves spilled.

Wasting with hunger, Upamanyu ate the leaves of the arka plant, lost his sight and fell into a well. At his teacher's word he prayed to the Ashvins. When they offered him a cake, he said, 'I will not eat it without first offering it to my teacher.'

Pleased with his discipline, the Ashvins restored his sight, and his teacher blessed him with all knowledge. His lesson was that even milk and food are to be taken only in the right way.
