Explanation

A child raised on its mother's milk, says Avvaiyar, grows strong enough to bear life's heavy burdens. Mother's milk, together with a mother's love, strengthens not only the body but the mind.

Science today confirms this. A child's first food is the foundation for its whole life.

Periya Puranam, life of Thirugnanasambandar

Sambandar and the Milk of Wisdom

From the Periya Puranam. At Sirkazhi, Sivapada Hrudayar left his three-year-old son on the bank of the temple tank and went to bathe. Unable to see his father, the child looked up at the temple tower and cried, 'Mother! Father!'

Moved by his cry, Uma appeared with Shiva and fed him the milk of wisdom from a golden cup. When the father returned and saw milk on the child's lips, he angrily asked who had given it. The child pointed to the sky and sang his first hymn, beginning 'Thodudaya seviyan', 'He who wears an earring'.

Tradition says that by the strength of that milk of wisdom, Sambandar travelled across the Tamil land as a child and sang sixteen thousand hymns. The strength a mother's milk gave him carried a great mission.
