Explanation

A guileless simplicity, says Avvaiyar, is an ornament for women. Pethaimai here does not mean ignorance but a pure heart without deceit, untouched by cunning.

The society of Avvaiyar's time linked this with women. But a guileless heart is a beauty in everyone. At the same time, it is society's duty to protect that simplicity from being deceived.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Shakuntala's Guileless Heart

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Shakuntala grew up in the hermitage of the sage Kanva among the deer and flowers of the forest, a woman without guile. King Dushyanta, who came hunting, saw her and wished to marry her. Trusting his word completely, she married him.

Later, when she went to his palace with their son Bharata, Dushyanta spoke before his people as if he did not know her. Shakuntala spoke the truth with tears and courage. Then a divine voice from the sky declared, 'She speaks the truth; this is your son.'

Dushyanta accepted her and their son. It is after that son, Bharata, that this land is called Bharatam. Heaven itself protected the truth of her guileless heart.
