Thiruppavai of Andal (verse 3)Andal's Song of Rain and Rice
From the Thiruppavai of Andal. In the month of Margazhi, at Srivilliputhur, Andal rose before dawn with her friends to keep the Pavai vow. In the third verse she sings of the blessings that come to the land when people keep the vow singing the name of the Lord who measured the worlds.
Her lines say: rain will fall three times a month across the land without harm; carp will leap among tall red paddy in the fields; bees will sleep in the blue lilies; and cows will fill pot after pot with milk.
Andal's faith is that the merit of a vow kept in dharma shows in flourishing fields.
