Explanation

Here self-restraint is spoken of as a treasure that must be guarded. We lock gold and valuables in a safe, and Valluvar says restraint deserves the same watchfulness. The reason is simple. Material wealth can be stolen by others, but restraint is usually lost by our own hand. A moment of anger, a careless word, a lapse of attention, and a name built over years can collapse.

The word porulaa, 'as wealth', is straightforward. Commentators differ a little on aakkam: some take it as growth or prosperity, others as general good. Whichever sense one prefers, Valluvar's claim is the same: for a living being nothing is better. The fame, rank and money we pursue will not last without restraint, whereas with restraint we acquire the ability to protect all the other things we value.

People today speak often of protecting their reputation. Underneath a good reputation lies self-restraint. A pause before posting something online, a pause before overtaking on the road, a pause before replying in an argument: these are the small acts by which the treasure is guarded. We all know of people who lost in one minute what they spent a lifetime building. So the guarding Valluvar asks for is not a grand vigil but a daily small alertness, the kind a careful householder shows when he checks the latch before sleeping.

A story

Bhishma's Vow

This scene comes from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. King Shantanu of Hastinapura had a son, Devavrata, outstanding in valour and learning and rightful heir to the throne. One day on the bank of the Ganga, Shantanu saw Satyavati, the daughter of the fishermen's chief, and his heart was drawn to her. But thinking of his son's right, he said nothing and grieved in silence.

Sensing his father's sorrow, Devavrata asked the reason and went to the chief of the fishermen. The chief set a condition: "Only my daughter's son may be king." Devavrata did not hesitate for a moment. "I give up my claim," he said. The chief pressed further: "Your own sons may claim it later." The prince answered at once, "From this day I will not marry, and I will keep celibacy all my life." Tradition says flowers rained from the sky and the gods hailed him as Bhishma, one who has taken a terrible vow.

The vow was not easy to keep. He gave up the kingdom, and he gave up the joys of a household. Later, when Satyavati's sons died, there were chances for Bhishma to marry and rule. Many urged him, and Satyavati herself pleaded. But Bhishma would not break his word. "The sun may give up its light and the earth its fragrance, but I will not give up my truth," he said.

He guarded his restraint like a treasure. In the war at Kurukshetra he stood by his word and his discipline. Even when he lay on the bed of arrows, he did not waver; from there he taught Yudhishthira the duties of dharma, teachings honoured as the Shanti Parva and Anushasana Parva.

The world still bows to a man who gave up his pleasure and his rights for his father's sake. The value he placed on his word and discipline gave him a greatness without equal.

To reflect on

Which promise or discipline of mine do I treasure as carefully as I would treasure wealth?
