Explanation

This is one of the best-known verses in Tamil. A wound caused by fire begins with pain and burning, but with medicine and time it heals, and even its scar fades. A scar made by the tongue is different. It lies not on the body but on the mind, and no one can apply ointment there. Even when the speaker later repents and begs pardon, the listener's memory keeps the mark.

The word ullaarum has been read as 'heals within' and as 'heals soon'. In sutta vadu, 'the scar burnt', Valluvar compares speech itself to fire; the picture is of both burning. The heat of a word is not always felt at once, but its smart may last for years. We all know a harsh word from a parent, a sneer from a teacher, a mockery from a friend that we still remember.

So the verse asks us to treat words as knives and fire. Every speaker should wonder how many years a sentence will live in another person's mind. Restraint before speaking is better than regret after speaking. An apology may help, but it is better that the wound is never made. In practice this means that when we correct a child, argue with a spouse or give feedback to a colleague, we choose words that speak to the fault without branding the person. We can be firm and honest and still not leave a scar.

A story

Karna in the Tournament Arena

This scene comes from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Drona arranged a tournament at Hastinapura to show the world what his pupils had learnt. Royal families and townspeople crowded in. Bhima and Duryodhana fought with maces. Arjuna displayed his archery with astonishing skill, and the crowd roared.

Then a young man appeared at the entrance of the arena. It was Karna. He declared that he could perform every feat Arjuna had shown, and he did so. The crowd was amazed, Duryodhana was delighted, and Arjuna burned with anger.

Kripa rose and said, "Young man, Arjuna is Kunti's son, born in the line of the Kurus. If you wish to challenge him, tell us who you are, who your father is and what royal line you belong to." By the custom of the day, princes could contend only with princes. Karna bowed his head. No word came from his lips.

Tradition says that Bhima also mocked him: "What has the son of a charioteer to do with a bow? Take up the whip." Karna burned inside as he heard it. Duryodhana at once crowned him king of Anga and defended him. Out of that gratitude Karna stood by Duryodhana for the rest of his life.

The mockery he heard that day stayed in his heart. Later too, he did not forget the insults that came his way, even at Draupadi's swayamvara. His life shows how long the scar burnt by the tongue may last.

To reflect on

What can I do so that no word of mine remains as a lasting scar in another person's heart?
