Explanation

Tradition says the name Thiruthani comes from 'thanithal', to be calmed. To pray for the calming of the mind to Murugan, who stands where his own anger was calmed, is most fitting.

From the tradition of Thiruthani

The hill where anger cooled

Temple tradition says Thiruthani is where Murugan's anger subsided and he sat in peace, after the great war with Sura and after the small clash with the hunters when he married Valli. There he sits calmly with Valli. So devotees go to Thiruthani to calm their own turmoil and anger; at the year's end they worship the temple steps and begin the new year in peace.
