The rooster that beats its wings and cries out so that Brahma of the lotus, Indra, Vishnu, the sages, the gods and all who worship rejoice; the mountains and seven seas dance, nectar wells up and all fourteen worlds enjoy delight; his spreading fame increases; the demons perish; giving, penance and scripture flourish; and the many strong-legged fiends take fright. O holy rooster banner of the Lord who dances where groves spread with plantain, tamarind, mango, screwpine and areca; the First Cause; rider of the golden peacock, the steed of true wisdom; the heroic warrior; the crest jewel of Uma, flawless as gold; the lotus-faced, cool Kumara, abode of grace, who steals the heart!

Explanation

The earlier verses sang of destruction; this one ends in joy. When the rooster crows it is dawn: the whole world wakes and rejoices, and good things flourish. The work closes with the sweet name 'Manoharan', the one who steals the heart.

From the tradition of Palani

Idumban's kavadi

Agastya asked the asura Idumban to bring two hills, Shivagiri and Shaktigiri, south from Kailasa. Idumban tied the two hills to the ends of a pole and carried them on his shoulder. When he set them down to rest at Palani, they would not move; a boy stood on the hill and said, 'This is mine.' Idumban fought him and fell; then, realising the boy was Murugan, he prayed, 'Bless all who come carrying burdens like this.' That is the origin of kavadi worship.
