Meaning

Through his devotion, he made himself one with the Lord's holy avatars; in a way the people of this world could not grasp, he praised the Lord alone, sang a thousand verses with his tongue, and gave them to us even in enacted gesture. Apart from service to that king's heart, what use are the small services others do?

Explanation

In some of his songs Nammalvar speaks as if he had become God himself: 'It was I who made the sea-girt world,' he says, claiming God's deeds as his own. The commentators say these words were born in a state of complete oneness with God. It is hard for the world to understand.

Kambar says that beside that deep experience, the small services others do are small indeed.

Vaishnava tradition (Nammalvar as a portion of Vishvaksena)

The Lord's Commander Came as the Alvar

From Vaishnava tradition. In Vaikuntha, Vishvaksena is commander of the Lord's hosts, the one who carries out all his commands. In Vaishnava temples every festival begins with his worship.

Tradition says that when the Lord saw people in the world suffering because they did not know the meaning of the Veda, he called Vishvaksena. 'Be born on earth, sing my glory in Tamil, and show everyone the way,' he said. And so Nammalvar was born at Kurugur to Kariyar and Udaiyanangai, as a portion of Vishvaksena.

From birth he did not cry or drink milk; he sat in meditation in the hollow of the tamarind tree. Because the Lord's own commander came to carry out the Lord's command, his songs sound like the Lord's own voice. The 'holy avatar' Kambar speaks of links with this tradition.
