Meaning

Is there a medicine that stops karma from growing? Our karma sprouts and branches again and again, like the branching heads of millet. He stopped the stain of the bond of birth that branches out like that; he blocked the cruel desert road to the south; he weeded out the weeds of desire completely, and made me his own. He is like the guarded field of Kurugai.

Explanation

Karma is like a seed; one grows into many branches. One evil thought multiplies into many evil deeds. What medicine can stop this?

The Alvar acted like a good farmer: he pulled the weeds up by the roots, stood guard over the field, and blocked the bad roads. As a watchman guards the crop, he guards the soul.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 25

Krishna Holds Up Govardhana as an Umbrella

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Every year the cowherds of Gokulam held a festival for Indra, god of rain. One year the boy Krishna said: 'It is this Govardhana hill that gives grass to our cows and water to us. Let us honour it instead.' And the cowherds did so.

Enraged, Indra sent great clouds. For seven days thunder, lightning and torrential rain lashed Gokulam. The fields were flooded, the cows trembled, and the people ran to Krishna.

Smiling, Krishna lifted Govardhana hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it up like an umbrella. Beneath it the cowherds, cows and calves stayed safe for seven days; not a drop fell on them. Indra realised his error and bowed. Like that guardian who protected his people and their fields, Kambar calls the Alvar 'the guarded field of Kurugai'.

What habit grows like a weed in your life? What would help you pull it out by the roots?
