Explanation

'Thaalaatri' means by effort, by labour. 'Thandha porul' means the wealth brought. 'Thakkaarkku' means for the worthy. 'Velaanmai' here does not refer to farming but to helping, hospitality, being of use to others. So the meaning of the verse is that one should realise that all the wealth gained by one's labour is meant to help the worthy.

This idea defines the purpose of wealth. Why is wealth sought? The first answer is for the needs of our life. But Valluvar goes a step further: wealth also gives the chance to help others. Using that chance is the full benefit of wealth. One who hoards and locks it up loses its greatest use.

Notice the word 'thaalaatri thandha'. In wealth gained by labour there are two points. One, wealth should come by honest labour. Two, one who knows the difficulty of wealth earned by labour realises its use and gives. There are those who lose easily what came easily; but one who gives what he earned by labour at the right place knows its worth.

The word 'thakkaar' is also important. It is not blindly giving to all; one must help knowing worth and need. To help knowing a person's need, his effort and the benefit he gives is wisdom.

So every young person beginning to earn can form the habit of setting aside a part of his earnings for the public good. That is the 'velaanmai' of Valluvar.

A story

Annamalai Chettiar's Charity

This is an imagined story from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. Annamalai Chettiar was very poor in youth. He worked in a small shop; in the evenings he carried goods in a basket from village to village and sold them. Toil from rising in the morning to night was his life. In a few years he ran a small shop. Then, trading across the sea in Burma and Ceylon, he gathered great wealth. All that wealth came by his labour.

One day, returning to his native village, the Chettiar was disturbed by the sight. The village tank lay silted up. People walked miles for drinking water. In the temple no lamp burned. Without a school, children played in the street. Travellers, with no place to stay, suffered in sun and rain.

He told his family, "I was born poor in this village. I grew up drinking this village's water and eating its food. The elders here gave me goods on credit and helped my trade. I earned by my labour; but the foundation for that labour was given by this village. This wealth must return to this village."

First he desilted the tank and built its bund. Then he renovated the temple and set up perpetual lamps. He built a primary school and gave free education to poor children. For travellers he built a rest house and gave free meals there. He wrote his name large on nothing, saying, "This came from the village; let it go to the village."

He also had the wisdom to know worth, giving only to those truly in need. His sons followed him. Even today the tank he built stands full of water. His life, returning to the village the wealth that his labour earned, is the true form of the verse: all the wealth earned by toil is for helping the worthy.

To reflect on

What part of what I have earned have I set aside for some public good?
