Explanation

'Idanil paruvam' is a season of straitened means, a time of poverty. Helping when wealth is there is easy. But helping others when one has little oneself is hard. 'Kadanari kaatchiyavar' are those of clear understanding who know their duty. Valluvar says such persons do not 'olkaar', do not falter in oppuravu even in times of want.

This verse shows that the measure of wealth is unconnected with oppuravu. Oppuravu is a nature of the heart. One with that nature gives more when wealthy and less, but without fail, when poor. The amount he gives may change; the quality of giving does not.

The word 'kadan arithal' is very important. Here oppuravu is not a choice but a duty. Repaying what we received from the village is a debt. A debt paid only when convenient is not a debt; duty is to do what one can even when means are lacking. Valluvar praises those with that sense of duty as 'kaatchiyavar'.

Helping in poverty is not only with goods. When one has no goods, one can comfort with words, help with bodily labour, give time, give good advice. All these are forms of oppuravu.

In our lives there is a habit of postponing: "I don't have it now; I'll do it when means come." That is not wrong; but a mind that does what it can right now is very high.

A story

Ilayankudi Maranar

This is the story of Ilayankudi Maranar told in Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. In Ilayankudi in the Chola country lived a farmer named Maranar. He was a devotee of Shiva and a man of great wealth. Feeding and honouring any devotee of Shiva who came he held to be the duty of his life. In his house there was always a gathering of devotees.

In the course of time his wealth began to decline. Yet he did not stop feeding devotees. He continued by borrowing and selling his possessions, and reached complete poverty. But his resolve, "Even in poverty I will not abandon service to devotees", did not diminish.

One night it rained heavily. At that time Lord Shiva came in the form of an aged devotee and stood at Maranar's doorstep. He was wet from the rain and hungry. Maranar welcomed him and seated him inside. But the house had no rice, no food, no firewood, no lamp.

Maranar told his wife, "The devotee waits hungry. What shall we do?" His wife said, "The paddy you sowed in the field today must have floated in the rainwater and gathered by the bund. Go and bring it." Maranar went in the dark and rain to the field and gathered the seed paddy. His wife roasted it into rice. With no way to get firewood, she pulled out the roof rafters of the house and burned them. She plucked greens from the garden and cooked.

When the food was ready Maranar went to call the devotee. But the devotee was not there. Suddenly light spread in the sky. Lord Shiva appeared on his bull with Uma. "Your devotion to my devotees does not diminish even in poverty," he said, and took Maranar and his wife into the shade of his feet.

The life of Maranar, who did not falter in oppuravu even when without wealth, is the best witness to the verse.
