Explanation

'Othadhu arivaan' is one who knows how to act in accord with the world, who knows the fitting act for society. Such a person, says Valluvar, 'uyir vaazhvaan', truly lives. 'Matraiyaan', the other who does not know so, 'seththaarul vaikkappadum', is counted among the dead. Though alive in body he is equal to the dead; that is the meaning of this stern statement.

To live is not mere breathing. Life has a meaning. That meaning lies in being of use to others beyond ourselves. One who looks only to his own belly and comfort lives in body but his life is meaningless. After he passes, no one remembers him. Whether he exists or not makes no difference to society. To be so is comparable to the state of the dead.

In contrast, one who does oppuravu and serves others lives even after death. His memory, his good deeds, the tank he built, the tree he planted, the education he gave extend his presence. Though the body is gone, fame lives with form.

The severity of the verse is a challenge. Which kind are we? Do we live, or merely exist? If we were absent, would anyone notice a lack? These questions lead us to examine the purpose of life.

We can take this not as an accusing verse but as an inviting verse. Each person can be useful to the world in some way. Finding that way is our task.

A story

The Sacrifice of Jatayu

This is the story of Jatayu told in the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Jatayu was king of birds in vulture form, son of Aruna and younger brother of Sampati. He was a friend of Dasharatha. When he met Rama in the Dandaka forest and learned he was Dasharatha's son, he mingled with great affection. "When you go out, I shall stay here to protect Sita," he said. Even in old age he did not forget that resolve.

When Ravana carried off Sita, her cry broke Jatayu's sleep. Seeing Ravana's Pushpaka chariot in the sky, he stood before him and asked, "Ravana, taking another's wife is not dharma. Let her go. Otherwise you must fight me." Ravana was young and strong; Jatayu very old. Jatayu knew his defeat in battle was certain.

Yet he fought. He attacked Ravana with beak and talons. He broke Ravana's chariot, killed his mules, broke his bow, and won some successes. But in the end Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings with his sword. Jatayu fell bleeding to the ground.

When Rama and Lakshmana came searching for Sita, they found Jatayu barely alive. He told them that Ravana had carried Sita toward the south and gave up his life. Rama himself performed the last rites like a son for his father's friend. That he performed such rites for a bird is the distinction of the Ramayana.

Jatayu did not worry about his life. He entered a fight that held no benefit for himself, for the sake of dharma. Though his life span was short, it was meaningful. One who lived for others lives on in fame after death. Jatayu is an excellent example for the verse: he who knows what is fitting truly lives.
