Explanation

This couplet offers a hopeful promise: those with a heart joined to compassion will not enter the dark world of suffering. Most commentators, Parimelazhagar among them, take 'irul sernda innaa ulagam' to mean the hell of the next world. Some take it to be a state of mind here and now, filled with ignorance, fear and sorrow.

Seen either way, 'darkness' here is a symbol of ignorance and pain. The compassionate person has a light in the heart, and it goes with him wherever he goes. So he has no need to enter the dark. For one who carries a lamp, even a dark room becomes a path.

There is also a psychological reason why the compassionate do not reach darkness. A mind that has no intent to hurt others is free from fear and guilt. That peace is itself, in a way, a luminous life even in this world. Around a compassionate person good people gather, and his life fills with friendship and trust.

We can remember this couplet in times of our own distress. Like a small lamp in the midst of gloom, even a small kind act lights the heart. This is the quiet confidence that Valluvar hopes to give.

A story

Yudhishthira and the Dog

This story is told in the Mahaprasthanika Parva of the Mahabharata. After the war at Kurukshetra the Pandavas ruled for a long time. After Krishna's departure they lost their attachment to worldly life and set out with Draupadi towards the Himalayas. A dog followed them. On the way Draupadi, Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima fell one by one. Only Yudhishthira went on with the dog.

At the mountain's summit Indra arrived with his chariot. 'Yudhishthira, by your righteousness you may come to heaven in your own body. Get into the chariot.' Yudhishthira asked what had become of his brothers and his wife. Indra said they had already reached heaven. Then, pointing to the dog, he said, 'This dog cannot enter heaven. Leave it and mount.'

Yudhishthira refused. 'I will not abandon this creature that has followed me so far in trust. I do not want a heaven won by forsaking it.' Indra pressed him again and again, but he did not move. 'To abandon a being that loves you is not dharma,' he said.

At that moment the dog took its true form. It was Yama Dharmaraja, the god of dharma, Yudhishthira's own father. Praising his son's compassion he said, 'You have been tested many times, and now you have won this test of mercy as well. Heaven is rightly yours.'

Yudhishthira feared nothing here. His devotion to dharma and his mercy for a dog opened to him the gate of a world full of light. For 'there is no entering the dark world for the compassionate' this is direct evidence.

In our own lives, when we protect even one small creature rather than abandon it, we make way for the light in our hearts.

When did you last refuse an easier path because it would have meant leaving someone, or something, behind?
