Explanation

This is the closing couplet of the chapter on compassion, and it offers a simple, practical way to grow it. When we stand before someone stronger than ourselves, fear arises, and we tremble to think what he may do. Valluvar asks us to realise that when those beneath us stand before us, they feel just the same. That is the centre of the verse.

'Valiyaarmun thannai ninaika' should be read slowly. 'Thannai ninaika' means to think of oneself. At the place of going against the weaker, when about to start hurting them, that thought will restrain us. The doubled 'than... thannin' stresses that each of us must see ourselves in the mirror.

The beauty of this practice is that it needs no doctrine. Every human being has at some time stood in fear before a teacher, an officer, an elder, a government clerk. Merely recalling that experience softens how we treat servants, students, children and animals.

Today this memory is needed most in places where we have power and opportunity. Before speaking to someone lower in station, to pause a moment and ask 'How would I feel in his place?' is the beginning of compassion. Valluvar gives this advice as a practice of thought rather than a command: 'ninaika' asks us to think and does not compel. The aim is for us to build the comparison in our own minds and reach compassion through it.

A story

Bhima and Hanuman

This incident is from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. While the Pandavas lived in the forest, Draupadi one day saw a beautiful Saugandhika flower carried by the wind. She asked Bhima to bring more like it. Bhima followed the scent northward. He was very proud of his strength and crossed forests and mountains without fear.

On the path through the plantain forest an old monkey lay with his tail stretched across a narrow track. Bhima saw him and shouted, 'Make way, monkey!' The monkey said softly, 'I am old and unwell. Lift my tail aside and pass.' Bhima carelessly tried to lift the tail. However hard he tried, it would not move. With both hands, then with all his strength, he tried. Sweat poured from him, yet he could not shift the tail at all.

His pride was subdued. He was bewildered that he, strong as a mountain, could not move even a tail. With folded hands he said humbly, 'Sir, who are you? I see you are no ordinary monkey. Forgive my arrogance.' The monkey then took his true form. He was Hanuman of the Ramayana, Bhima's elder brother as a son of the wind god.

Hanuman embraced Bhima affectionately. 'Brother, you may have strength, but before showing it to others, remember that there are stronger than you.' He gave Bhima a boon, promising to abide on Arjuna's banner in the war and roar to give the Pandavas strength.

The lesson Bhima learned that day stayed with him all his life. The memory of how he had trembled before the strong made him gentle with the weak. That memory is the inner meaning of 'valiyaarmun thannai ninaika'.
