Explanation

This couplet presents a subtle truth about restraining anger. We do not show anger to those stronger than ourselves, because it will not work there and the harm will fall on us. That restraint comes from fear, not from virtue. Real guarding of anger is controlling it where we are the stronger, where our anger would take effect. The one who restrains there is the true guardian of anger.

Sellidam is the place where a person's anger is effective: those below him, the weak, the dependent. Wife, children, servants and students come here. It is with them that we most easily show anger, since they cannot resist. Restraint there is the real virtue.

Allidam is where anger does not work, before the powerful. There, whether he restrains it or not has no merit, because yielding is compulsory. Valluvar makes this contrast graceful with the questioning word en, "what?".

Commentators give another sense as well: it is good to restrain anger even where it works, while where it does not work, restrained or not it is evil. In any case the central idea is one: how we behave where we have authority or strength is the measure of our character.

We can fit the verse to our own lives. Elders show anger easily toward the young at home, superiors toward juniors in offices, teachers toward pupils. Authority becomes a shield for them. Restraining anger in exactly those places shows true character. To bow before the strong is not virtue but convenience; to hold oneself in before the weak is virtue.

A story

Rama Calms Lakshmana

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana there is a scene. The day of Rama's coronation had been announced. Kaikeyi's boons blocked it, and Rama had to go to the forest for fourteen years. On hearing this, Lakshmana boiled over. He was Rama's brother, a warrior and a master archer.

Lakshmana spoke in anger: "Father is old and has been deluded by Kaikeyi's words. Why should we honour them? With my arrows I will subdue Ayodhya and crown you. Whoever stops me I will destroy." His eyes reddened, and he was fully capable of doing it.

Rama listened calmly. He had more reason to be angry than Lakshmana, for he was the one who had lost the kingdom. Rama had as much power as Lakshmana and could have subdued Ayodhya if needed. But he lovingly stopped his brother: "Brother, keeping father's word is dharma. There is no use in being angry against the play of fate. Calm your anger." There was no command in his words, only love.

In a little while Lakshmana quieted. Realising his error, he decided to go to the forest with Rama. There, tradition says, he guarded Rama and Sita for fourteen years without sleeping.

Rama is a living proof of "He who guards anger where it can take effect is the true guardian." He had strength and reason, yet he put anger aside and chose dharma. Governing power by restraint when he had it raised him, and made him a god in the hearts of the people.

To reflect on

With whom are you most free to show anger because they cannot answer back, and what would restraint there look like?
