Explanation

Here Valluvar calls anger "the killer of those who come near". Those who accompany an angry person, who are with him, suffer its effect. Moreover it burns the "raft of kinship", the protective floating support of relatives. Emam means protection and punai means a raft, a float that helps in crossing a river.

Life is like a great river, and kinsfolk and friends are the raft that helps us cross. When trouble comes they are the ones who bear us up. The angry person burns that very raft with his words. Later, in a time of distress, he sinks without support.

The beauty of the simile deserves note. Fire burning a raft that floats on water is naturally a contradictory picture, yet anger is exactly such a contradictory force. It turns even loving relations into enmity.

In practice a single angry word in a family can become a quarrel of many years. Relations built with love break in a few words. Hence Valluvar warns that anger first strikes those near. To preserve relations, we must keep calm when anger rises.

Commentators give inam not only the sense of kinsmen but also friends, associates and the company around us. All who stand with us in life belong to this raft called inam. The angry person loses them one by one and at last suffers alone. That is the great loss of anger.

A story

Durvasa's Curse on Shakuntala

The great poet Kalidasa built a scene in his play Abhijnanasakuntalam. It is a part elaborated from the Mahabharata tale by Kalidasa's rich imagination. In the hermitage of the sage Kanva, Shakuntala, having married Dushyanta, was absorbed in thoughts of him after he left for his capital. Her friends Anasuya and Priyamvada were with her.

One day the sage Durvasa came to the hermitage and called out, "A guest has come." Shakuntala, lost in her thoughts, did not hear his voice. Durvasa took it as an insult and was angry at once. "He for whom you forgot me will forget you," he cursed her.

The friends were alarmed, fell at the sage's feet and begged for relief. His anger slightly calmed, he said, "If he sees some ornament he gave as a token, his memory will return." But the curse had already begun to work. Later, when Shakuntala went to the court, the ring slipped into the river on the way. The king did not recognise her. She suffered in shame and grief.

Later in the play a fisherman found the ring in a fish's belly and gave it to the king. On seeing it Dushyanta's memory returned. He was filled with remorse. Only after years of the pain of separation were they reunited.

The story shows the meaning of "Anger, killer of those who come near, burns the raft of kinship." A single moment of angry cursing burned Shakuntala's married life. The raft of love between her and Dushyanta burned for years. Anger spares not even a sage; its fire touches the innocent near it.
