Explanation

Here Valluvar gives a simple, immediately understood simile. If a man strikes the ground hard with his hand, the ground suffers nothing; his hand aches. Kaipizhaiyaatru means the hand does not escape, that is, it will not remain unhurt. In the same way one who regards anger as a "worthwhile thing", a source of benefit or a sign of strength, will be ruined.

Some regard anger as strength. They think that if they show anger others will fear them, work will get done, and they will be respected. It is this mistaken belief that Valluvar points to with porulenru kondavan. In truth anger is not rule but slavery. It does not win; it loses.

The earth is a form of patience. Our tradition says the earth bears even those who dig into her. One who strikes such a patient earth hurts his own hand. In the same way, when anger provokes the patient, its pain burns the angry one.

The practical meaning: when anger rises we can ask what its benefit is. Mostly its result is loss: relations break, the body wilts, the name is spoiled. So it is wise to treat it as harm, not as a thing of value.

A story

The Brahmani and the Mongoose

The Panchatantra and the Hitopadesha tell a story that shows the consequence of anger. In a certain town a Brahmin named Devasharman lived with his wife. A child was born to them. In the same house they had also lovingly raised a mongoose as their own child. The mongoose played with the baby and guarded the home.

One day the Brahmin's wife left the baby in the mongoose's care and went to fetch water. At that time a black cobra slid into the house and moved toward the baby. The mongoose leapt at it, bit it and killed it. Its mouth was covered in blood.

When the Brahmin's wife came back, the mongoose ran happily to greet her at the door. Seeing blood on its mouth, her heart trembled. "It has killed my child," she thought, and without stopping to think she hurled the pot she carried on her head at the mongoose. The mongoose died at once.

She ran in and found the baby sleeping safely. Near it lay the dead cobra. Realising her mistake, she beat her chest and wept. The Brahmin came and, seeing the scene, sank into grief. They had lost, through their anger, a true friend who had saved them.

This story illustrates the couplet "One who values anger as worthwhile is like one whose hand strikes the ground." A moment's anger brought her no benefit, only lifelong sorrow. What she struck was not the mongoose but her own conscience, and that wound did not heal.
