Explanation

This is the most famous image in the chapter on knowing the place. The crocodile is a creature of water. In deep water it can kill its enemies and can even drag a great elephant into the water. But if the same crocodile leaves the water and lies on land, even small creatures like a dog or a jackal may attack and overcome it. Here the crocodile's strength has not changed; only its place has. It is the clearest illustration that strength depends on place.

'Nedumpunal' is long, deep water, where the crocodile is king. 'Adumpunal' is the water in which it gains killing power. 'Neengin' means 'if it leaves that place'. Then its strength becomes useless. 'Adhanaip pira' means that others will easily overcome it.

The image fits many stages of life. A great teacher is like a king in his classroom, but he may stumble in trade. A great trader is a crocodile in his business, yet in politics may be easy prey. If someone leaves his own ground and begins to act in an unfamiliar setting, his strength diminishes.

The verse also invites self-examination: what is my water? In what setting am I a crocodile? One who knows it will stand and work there; one who has not found it should seek it out. To be in the water that suits one's strength is the base of a good life.

A story

Gajendra and the Crocodile

From the Bhagavata Purana: At the foot of Mount Trikuta was a great lotus pond. There Gajendra, chief of the elephants, lived with his herd. He was of great strength and feared no animal of the forest. One day, unable to bear the heat of the sun, he came with his herd to the pond to drink and bathe.

Gajendra went into the deep part of the pond, drew up water, plucked lotuses with his trunk and bathed in delight. At that moment a huge crocodile living at the bottom of the pond seized his leg. Gajendra pulled with all his might. On land he was king, but this water was the crocodile's place. Here the crocodile was the stronger.

The elephants of his herd tried to pull him out, but they could not. The Purana says the struggle lasted a thousand years. Gajendra's strength diminished, while the crocodile's strength in the water remained as it was. The elephants on the land had no power in the water. Gajendra saw: "I cannot win here by my strength."

His mind grew still and he realised that his one protector was the Lord. Holding a lotus in his trunk, he cried, "Adimoolame!" Hearing that call, Vishnu mounted Garuda and came swiftly. He hurled his discus and cut the crocodile's grip. The crocodile at once took the form of a Gandharva freed from a curse, bowed and went away. Gajendra came ashore and worshipped the Lord.

In this episode the crocodile won in its own place, the water. The elephant is king in his own place, the land, but in the pond his strength was of no use. When the place changed, strength lost its meaning. The story shows the other side of the verse, that the crocodile wins in deep water, but out of it the situation is different.
