Explanation

This verse states two prohibitions: 'thodangarka', do not begin, and 'ellarka', do not belittle. Both are subject to one condition: 'idam kanda pinnalladhu', not until the place has been seen. The first is: begin no undertaking. The second: do not despise and underrate the foe. Only after seeing the place may either be done. Only one who has seen and understood the place knows the foe's true strength and the true nature of the task.

'Idam kanda pin' means going and seeing for oneself. It means examining with one's own eyes, not relying on hearsay. Before an invasion, sending scouts to study the enemy's land, learning the mountains and rivers, and mapping the places where food and water can be found all come under this. Only then does it become clear where to camp and by what road to go.

The part 'ellarka mutrum', do not wholly despise, is also important. When the place is unknown, it is easy to underrate the enemy. The thought arises, "He is small; we can easily defeat him." But his position may be a mountain top or a fortress. Only after seeing the place does it become clear how strong he truly is.

The same counsel fits daily life. It is wrong to buy a house in a new town without seeing the place. Before starting a new business one must examine the market in person. Before facing a rival one must know his field. The verse honours direct observation. Hearing is the beginning of knowledge; seeing makes it complete. To refrain from starting before examining, and to act without hesitation after examining, together make an undertaking succeed.

A story

The Vanaras Sent to the Four Directions

From the Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda): When the rainy season was over, Sugriva began to send the vanara armies to search for Sita. It was not known in which direction she might be. Rama consulted Sugriva: "Where should we search for Sita? If we go in one direction and are disappointed, time will be wasted." So a plan of complete search was made.

Sugriva divided the vanara host into four great groups. Vinata was to go east, Sushena west, Shatabali north, and Angada, Hanuman and Jambavan south. He explained in detail the route in each direction and the mountains, rivers, forests and lands there.

He knew the lie of the land from his forefathers' knowledge and travellers' tales. He also set a time limit: "All must return within a month." And he warned, "Whoever returns without news will face severe punishment." The method of how each army should go, where to halt and how to search was clearly stated.

Seeing that Hanuman was in the southern group, Rama gave him his signet ring. "If you find Sita, show her this; she will trust you," he said. Hanuman received it humbly. The groups of the other directions returned in a month and said, "We did not find Sita." Only the southern party crossed the Vindhya hills, explored caves and reached the sea shore.

Because the place in every direction was systematically examined, it became clear where Sita was not and where she might be. Had all been sent hastily in one direction, this clarity would not have come. When the southern party reached the sea, the vulture Sampati pointed out Lanka to them.

By examining the land thoroughly in advance, knowing the nature of each region and dividing the armies accordingly, Sita's whereabouts were discovered. The search is a good example of beginning an undertaking only after the place has been seen.
