Explanation

This verse brings a message of hope: even the weak can win. How? By knowing the place and acting with care. 'Aatraarum' includes those of little strength. 'Aatri aduba' means they will destroy the enemy by acting in a fitting manner. 'Pottraarkan' means those who do not honour them, that is, enemies.

The message of the verse is simple. Those who are few and weak will lose if they confront the stronger head-on. But if they choose a place favourable to themselves, draw the enemy into it and act carefully, they can win. In a narrow pass, a dense forest, a marsh or a river bank, a numerically larger army cannot use its strength. A small force can show its skill there.

The phrase 'pottrich cheyin' points to careful action. Even when the place is favourable, there should be no carelessness. At each step, with caution, knowing one's own shortcomings, one must make full use of the benefit of the place. The weak cannot afford to give room for error.

In modern life small firms do not compete head-on with large ones; they choose a distinct niche in the market and become strong there. An individual too can succeed by choosing a field that fits his strengths and developing deep skill in it. Knowing the place is a shield for the weak, and a hope for anyone who feels outmatched by the circumstances of the world.

A story

The Dance Hall That Brought Down Kichaka

From the Mahabharata (Virata Parva): In their year of concealment the Pandavas lived hidden in the Matsya kingdom. Kichaka, brother of Queen Sudeshna and commander of the army, was the strongest man in that kingdom. Seeing the maid Sairandhri in the palace, he desired her. He did not know that she was Draupadi.

Draupadi refused him many times and warned him of her Gandharva husbands, but Kichaka did not listen. One day in King Virata's court he insulted her. Bhima held back his anger, for to reveal himself would waste the whole year of concealment.

That night Draupadi came to Bhima and told her sorrow. The two made a plan. To confront the mighty Kichaka openly would be unwise, but he could be drawn to a lonely place. Draupadi spoke softly to Kichaka: "Meet me tonight in the dance hall; no one will be there."

That hall was where Arjuna, as Brihannala, taught dance to the women of the palace. By day it was full of music; at night it was empty. Bhima went there beforehand and lay on the large couch in the dark. He took the darkness and solitude of the place as his ally.

Kichaka entered eagerly, thinking the figure on the couch was Draupadi. The place was unfamiliar to him and in the dark his sight was useless. Bhima sprang up. A fierce wrestling followed, but Bhima used the quiet of the hall so that no noise was heard outside. Kichaka's strength was of no use in the dark solitude. He fell.

Next morning the court was shocked to find Kichaka dead. The identity of the Pandavas remained hidden.

Bhima was not weak, yet circumstances did not allow him to show his strength. He chose the right place and won.
