Explanation

The first verse told the nature of kin; this verse tells the benefit if such kin are obtained. One who gets kinsmen whose love does not break will find many benefits arriving continually, says Valluvar.

'Viruppaaraach chutram' is kin whose love never lessens. Whether good or bad times, victory or defeat, their love does not change. Such kin are not easily found. Valluvar marks that by 'iyaiyin', if obtained, if it comes about. It shows how rare it is.

'Aruppaara aakkam' is unceasing growth. If the kin are strong, wealth gathers, protection comes, help comes, strength of mind comes. When one falls into a crisis, many hands come forward. Thus prosperity continues without stopping.

Here the love of kin is described as capital. Material capital may diminish, but the capital of love grows as it is spent. So its benefits are spoken of in the plural, 'palavum'.

A leader must strive to create this capital. To win the love of kin, giving, sweet speech and respect are needed. The following verses explain them.

So this verse establishes that the love of kin is the greatest foundation of a country and a family.

One who understands this will quickly mend even small bitterness that arises among kin and keep the love unbroken.

A story

The Allies Who Stood with the Pandavas

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva): Before the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas' army was smaller than the Kauravas'. The Kauravas had eleven akshauhinis; the Pandavas seven. But the Pandavas had kinsmen who stood with them with love and firmness. Their love did not lessen in any crisis.

Drupada, king of Panchala, was Draupadi's father. For the sake of his daughter and sons-in-law he gave his entire army. His son Dhrishtadyumna became the Pandava commander. Draupadi's brother Shikhandi also joined the army. Virata, who had given them refuge during their year of concealment, strengthened the relationship by marrying his daughter Uttara to Abhimanyu. He also stood with his army on the Pandavas' side.

Though Krishna gave the Yadavas' Narayani Sena to Duryodhana, he himself stood as Arjuna's charioteer. Yadava heroes such as Satyaki and Kuntibhoja supported the Pandavas. Young relatives such as Bhima's son Ghatotkacha, Arjuna's son Abhimanyu and Draupadi's five sons also took part.

Even in the exile years, while the Pandavas suffered many hardships, these people did not slacken their love. Even when they wandered in the forest having lost the kingdom, Krishna met and consoled them. Drupada sent messengers to learn their condition. Thus a relationship of unbroken love was formed.

The result? In the eighteen-day war the numerically smaller Pandava army grew strong through its relatives' love, faith and support. Yudhishthira won. Kin whose love did not break gave him kingdom and victory.

What emerges: ability alone does not give victory; kin who stand together in love are a great part of it.
