Explanation

The previous verse spoke of two qualities, giving and sweet speech. This verse joins great generosity and freedom from anger, and says emphatically that no one in the world has more kin than one with both. It shows how important generosity and absence of anger are in cherishing kin.

'Perungodai' is not a small help but the quality of giving generously with a large heart. He is not one who gives after calculating, but one who gives with a full heart. Everyone loves such a person. The gratitude that arises in others through his giving binds them to the leader.

'Penaan vekuli' is one who does not nurse anger in his mind. Valluvar is not asking us to prevent anger from arising; he asks that anger that has come should be let go and not cultivated. Anger often drives away kin. If the leader is angry, relatives will fear even to approach him. Generosity attracts them; anger repels them.

Both together make it complete. If a giver is also angry, receivers come hesitantly. If one without anger is also without generosity, then, though he is good, he cannot retain relationships, there being nothing to receive.

The word 'marunguudaiyaar' denotes those who have kin standing near. The hyperbole 'maanilaththu il' says that such a man is unmatched in the whole world.

So those who wish to gather kin must take generosity and freedom from anger as two eyes. They are to be practised daily in conduct.

A story

Yudhishthira Who Mastered Anger

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva, Sabha Parva): Yudhishthira was called 'Ajatashatru', one in whom enmity is not born. He was famed for his power of controlling anger and for generous giving. In his reign at Indraprastha he fed thousands of brahmins and poor people every day.

Even when he lost everything at the dice game and went to the forest, his generosity did not change. In the forest he worried about how to feed the brahmins who followed him. He worshipped the Sun god and received the Akshaya Patra. With it he fed all the brahmins. It was the mind that prayed to God for the sake of giving to others.

When Draupadi was insulted in the dice hall, Bhima trembled with rage. He vowed to tear open Duhshasana's chest. But Yudhishthira kept calm and restrained his brother: "Do not be angry; the time has not yet come." In the forest he always spoke gently to his brothers and Draupadi. He valued dharma and patience above anger.

Because of these qualities, countless people stood around him. Sages stayed with him in the forest. Krishna came often to console him. Relatives and friends stood with him in his hardship. Many came forward to help him recover the lost kingdom.

Duryodhana's circle against Yudhishthira was also a big crowd, but it was bound by fear and desire. Yudhishthira's kin were bound by love and respect. The final victory in the war was on his side.

Yudhishthira's life is a fine testimony that kin embrace one who is greatly generous and free from anger.

To reflect on

When anger rises in you toward someone close, do you nurse it, or can you let it pass and give instead?
