Explanation

In this verse 'varisai' is honour according to merit. 'Podhu nokku' is regarding all alike without discerning differences of merit. If the leader, rather than honouring all equally, shows respect according to each person's merit, work and contribution, then, seeing it, many will try to depend on him and earn merit, says Valluvar.

At first this may seem like discrimination. But here the distinction is not for wrong reasons but on the basis of merit. Those who work hard, are trustworthy and have rare talent should be recognised as such. If everyone is given the same regard, the meritorious will lose heart and the undeserving will grow proud.

'Adhu nokki vaazhvaar palar' means many live looking toward that regard. People wish to gain the leader's respect and try to become worthy of it. Thus honouring merit becomes a method of encouragement. It grows talent and effort throughout the institution.

Moreover, among relatives it also preserves fairness. Classifying them, with senior regard for the senior, junior regard for the junior and special regard for achievers, makes each aware of his place. No one suffers injustice in it.

But this order should not lose compassion. Giving regard according to merit is different from scorning one of lesser merit. Everyone has a basic dignity.

In today's organisations, commendations, promotions and awards are forms of this verse.

A story

The First Honour at the Rajasuya

From the Mahabharata (Sabha Parva): At the end of the Rajasuya sacrifice the question arose of who among the assembled kings should receive the first honour (agra-puja). In the hall were many great kings and sages. Yudhishthira asked Bhishma for advice. Bhishma, with mature wisdom, said, "Krishna alone is worthy of the first honour."

Bhishma gave the reason: "Krishna is versed in the Vedas, excellent in power, establisher of dharma, and doer of good for the world. He is of greater merit than all here. Although there are many senior in age and position, in merit he is foremost." Yudhishthira accepted this, called Sahadeva and had him perform the agra-puja to Krishna.

Shishupala, king of Chedi, present in the hall, did not accept this. "With so many great kings here, the first honour to a cowherd's son?" he said angrily, reviling Krishna, Bhishma and Yudhishthira. But Bhishma and other elders firmly supported the judgement based on merit.

In this event Yudhishthira and Bhishma did not treat all kings alike. They ranked them by merit. Due respect and gifts were also given to senior kings. But the principal honour went to the one with merit.

Though Shishupala was punished, the event shows the need to honour merit and the envy some bear at it. The other kings in the hall realised the value of this honour and respected Yudhishthira's fairness.

A leader who ranks according to merit keeps the assembly dignified; those who see it are encouraged to become worthy.

To reflect on

Do you recognise those who contribute most in a way they can see, or do you spread the same praise on everyone?
