Explanation

The previous verse said the world runs because of kannottam. This verse develops the same thought from another angle. 'Ulagiyal' is the nature of the world, the way people deal with one another. Valluvar says that entire practice rests on kindness. Trust in trade, forgiveness in relationships, yielding in friendship and compassion in government are all forms of kannottam. Without them the world's conduct would be left only as hard calculation.

The second line is stern: those without it are 'nilakkup porai', a load upon the ground. This is not a word of contempt to belittle someone; it is poetry that conveys how heavy a life without kindness is for others. The difference between a burden and a benefit becomes clear. A tree gives shade, a river gives water, and a human should give kindness. If he refuses, he becomes mere weight.

Readers may find it harsh to call a person a burden, but Valluvar measures a person's worth by the contribution he makes. Kindness is the simplest and yet the greatest contribution one can make, and the one who does not offer even that remains as mere weight.

A question rises for us: how much weight do we add, and how much do we remove, for our family, our neighbours and our workplace? Does our arrival in a room make the atmosphere gentler or tighter? The answer shows whether we are a burden or a support to the land.

A story

Rama Accepts Guha as a Brother

From the Ramayana: on the way into exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana reached the bank of the Ganga. There lived Guha, the hunter chief who ruled the town of Shringaverapura. Learning of Rama's coming, he hurried with honey, fish and fruits and bowed to him. His heart was full of love.

Guha belonged to the hunter clan. He felt unworthy before a prince. Many would hesitate over whether to touch the food he offered. But the look Rama turned on Guha was entirely loving. 'You are the fourth brother with my three,' he said and embraced him. Rama's mind held no barrier of clan, birth or rank.

Guha, with his boatmen, helped Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to cross the Ganga. He posted his people on guard. The story of Guha also tells that through the night he stood with his bow beside Lakshmana under the tree where Rama slept, keeping watch. Later, when Bharata came with an army, Guha tried to stop it in fear; but seeing Bharata's tears and love, his mind cleared and he showed the way.

Guha held a place in Rama's life, and that place came not from rank but from Rama's kindly look. It is what made this Puranic tale a story of undying friendship.

Valluvar's thought is that the world goes on through such relations. One with kindness is a support to the world; one without is a load.
