Explanation

This verse states the essential limit of kannottam. Kindness is good, but it must not go to the point of abandoning duty. If a judge pities the face of a convict and changes the verdict, it is not kannottam but failure of duty. If a teacher out of pity for a pupil who scored low gives wrong marks, it is not love but injustice. That is why Valluvar attaches the condition 'karumam sidhaiyaamal'.

The ability to protect duty and kindness together is rare. One who guards only duty may become hard-hearted; one who guards only kindness may become weak. One who joins both is the true leader. If he has to refuse someone he refuses with a gentle word; if he has to correct, he corrects with respect; if he must punish, he punishes with regret. His act may be stern, but his look will be kindly.

'Urimai udaiththu ivvulagu' means this world becomes his own. Commentators explain this in several ways: he will gain the fitness to rule the world, he will win the affection of the people of the world, or all the good things he desires will come to him. In any case it is certain that the world will accept him and make room for him.

This is a big lesson in daily life. A manager leading a team, a head guarding a family and a doctor attending a patient must keep kindness and duty in balance. In the name of kannottam we must not allow wrongs; in the name of duty we must not lose compassion.

A story

Rama and Vibhishana

From the Ramayana: before the war on Lanka, Rama's army was camped on the seashore. Then Ravana's younger brother Vibhishana came through the air with four ministers and cried, 'I have come to take refuge with Rama.' The vanara leaders were alarmed. How could the brother of Ravana be trusted? It might be an enemy's trick, they said.

Sugriva warned clearly, 'Rama, it is dangerous to accept the enemy's brother. It is better to hold him here.' Others also gave various opinions. Rama listened carefully to everyone. He did not hurry. He did not ignore the fears of the commanders; yet he had no thought of turning away one who had sought refuge with him.

At last Rama said, 'One who has come to me saying "I surrender" I shall not abandon in any state. Even if he is an enemy, to give protection to one who has asked it once is my vow.' But he did not do this without inquiry. He asked Hanuman's view of Vibhishana's words and conduct. Hanuman bore witness to his sincerity. Only after that did Rama accept Vibhishana.

Here Rama protected duty and kindness together. He did not neglect the royal duties of battle strategy and protecting the army; he took counsel and tested. At the same time he gave his kindly regard to the one who came seeking refuge. His decision brought great benefit in the war. Vibhishana knew Ravana's secret places, and his guidance had a share in the victory. After the war he also became king of Lanka.

The very word Ramarajya says that the world became Rama's own. People still remember his rule, in which kindness was shown without damage to duty.
