Explanation

This couplet describes the practical abilities of a fort. First, a large area must be defensible with a small guard. If thousands of soldiers are needed to guard a fort, it is costly and weak. If it is enough to strongly guard a few gates and walls, the fort is excellent.

Second, it must have a large space inside. People, armies, food and animals need room to stay and live. A fort with little space gets into trouble in a siege. Third, it must destroy the spirit of a powerful enemy. On seeing the fort the enemy should lose heart, thinking it hard to win.

'Urupakai' is a strong enemy. The destruction of his spirit is the fort's greatest victory, since half the victory is achieved before the war starts. An excellent fort wins without fighting.

Commentators explain 'sirukaappu' as a structure with only a few gates, defensible easily since the approaches are few. The lesson we get is that security comes not only from great expense and many restrictions but from good design. The couplet states practical wisdom about the cost and burden of defence. A fort that needs a great number of soldiers is a load on the state. A structure in which guarding a few places is enough saves the state's wealth and energy. It is a tribute to intelligent design, and good design is cheaper than force.

A story

Jarasandha's Girivraja

The Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata describes Girivraja, the capital of Jarasandha, king of Magadha. When Yudhishthira wished to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice, Krishna pointed out that Jarasandha alone was a strong obstacle.

The Mahabharata says Girivraja was a city surrounded by five hills. The hills stood around the city like a great natural wall. Only a few gaps between the hills were the ways into the city. It was enough to guard those passes, yet inside were a spacious city and fields.

Thus the city had the advantage of guarding a large area with a small guard. Jarasandha had defeated and imprisoned many kings, and none dared attack his fort. It may be said that his army and his hill fort destroyed the spirit of other kings.

The Mahabharata says Krishna, Bhima and Arjuna went to Girivraja disguised as brahmins. It is also said they entered by a way other than the gate. After honouring them, Jarasandha learned their true identities and agreed to wrestle with Bhima.

The wrestling with Bhima lasted many days. In the end, at Krishna's hint, Bhima tore Jarasandha apart and felled him. The kings in prison were set free.

This story shows both sides of the fourth couplet of the chapter. Girivraja was a strong fort that guarded a large area with a small guard and destroyed the spirit of other kings. But Jarasandha, who relied on the fort, did not follow the path of dharma, and so his fall did not depend on his fortress.
