Explanation

This couplet states three needs of a fort. First, it should be hard to capture. Second, it should hold stored food, water, weapons and other provisions inside. 'Koozh' is food. The idea is that even if a long siege comes, those inside should not weaken from hunger.

Third, it should be easy for those inside to hold their ground. Only if there are air, water, facilities and ways for soldiers to move around inside can they endure for long. A fort with hunger, disease and congestion falls even without being attacked from outside.

Here 'agaththaar' refers to the soldiers and people inside. Thinking of their comfort and welfare is a sign of a good fort. Some commentators explain 'nilaikkelidhaam' as easy for taking a fighting stance, that is, a structure in which those inside can easily attack and defend.

In ancient wars sieges lasted for months. If a fort had to be given up for hunger, even strong walls were useless. The couplet reminds us that for our own safety we need reserves of food, water and medicine. The three are interdependent. Because the fort is hard to capture, enemies will lay siege; as the siege lengthens, provisions are needed; and even with provisions, if there is no comfort for those inside, the fort will not last. So the need for one leads to another, which is Valluvar's careful design.

A story

The Grain Pits of a Hill Fort

This is an imagined tale. In the southern country there was a hill fort. At its summit were a small Shiva temple and a hundred families. The fort's guard chief was an old warrior, Periyasamy, who had seen many sieges in youth. Each year in harvest season he gave first priority to storing grain.

In deep pits cut in the rock of the fort, paddy and finger millet were kept. A spring at the hilltop always oozed water. In the rainy season water was also stored in rock cisterns. 'We store not only for war but for famine,' he told the youths.

One year an army from a neighbouring country suddenly came and surrounded the fort. The height of the hill and the steep path did not let them attack directly. They laid siege, waiting for those inside to surrender from hunger. Days became months.

Inside, Periyasamy shared food in measure with each family. The spring water was enough for all. Children and the elderly were fed first. All remained united. Worship went on daily in the temple, which also gave the people hope.

After five months the food of the besieging army ran out. Disease and weariness spread among them. In the end they lifted the siege and went away. Periyasamy said with a smile, 'The strength of our fort lies not in the walls but in the grain in the pits and in our united hearts.'

The story shows the three things: a fort hard to take, stored provisions, and a structure in which it is easy to stay. What kept those inside standing was not only food and water but also the love of sharing.
