Explanation

This couplet names three ways an enemy tries to take a fort, and says the best fort cannot be won by any of them. The first is 'mutral': a siege that surrounds the fort and forces surrender by hunger. The second is 'mutraadhu erindhu': trying to capture it by direct assault without siege.

The third is 'araippaduththal'. Commentators have two explanations. Parimelazhagar and others take it as dividing some of those inside, or tunnelling from within, to break up the fort. Others explain that since 'araipodhal' means breach of trust, it means seducing some of those inside by bribes so that they open the gate from within. In both, the idea is breaking it from within.

A fort that withstands all three is strong in every way. Preventing external attack is one part; keeping honesty and unity within is another. This shows that for a fort inner unity matters more than outer strength.

In today's world too, in computer security and corporate security, the danger from insiders is often bigger than the attack from outside. The lesson now is that trust and vigilance must go together. Since the third way in this couplet concerns enmity from within, it relates to the chapter on 'Utpakai'. Being as ready for a split from within as for strength from outside is the nature of a good fort, and for that honest rule and trust among the people are vital. A fort whose gates are open to treachery is no fort at all.

A story

Shalva Attacks Dvaraka

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells of the Saubha Vadha. King Shalva, a friend of Shishupala, wished to avenge Shishupala's fall at Krishna's hands. The Mahabharata says that by worshipping Shiva he gained a boon and obtained a flying city called Saubha, with which he attacked Dvaraka.

At that time Krishna was at Indraprastha. The Yadava warriors in Dvaraka defended the city. Shalva rained arrows from the sky and attacked the walls and gates. The townspeople were afraid. But Krishna's son Pradyumna gathered the Yadava commanders and guarded the fort.

Shalva tried both siege and direct assault. The gates of Dvaraka stood firm. No one inside betrayed the city. The Yadava warriors did not leave their posts. All Shalva's efforts were in vain.

Learning the news, Krishna returned to Dvaraka. The Mahabharata says he faced Shalva in a great battle and brought him down. The city of Saubha was destroyed.

This story is an example of a fort that cannot be won by siege, assault or breaching from within. Dvaraka stood not only through strong construction but also through the unity of those inside. That the city could stand even in the absence of its chief was due to the vigilance of warriors like Pradyumna. Collective vigilance saved the city. The trust of the people held the city firm.
