Explanation

This is the closing couplet of the chapter. The previous nine couplets named many excellences of a fort: natural setting, height, breadth, strength, inaccessibility, food, good fighters, and the ability to withstand sieges. This couplet says that even with all these, a fort in the hands of those lacking effective action is as good as none.

'Vinaimaatchi' is excellence in action: effort, vigilance, enthusiasm, skill and unity all together. In the hands of those without them, however fine the fort, it will serve the enemy. A fort with lazy and careless guards grows weak.

'Illadhu aran', 'there is no fort', is a very stern phrase. Valluvar says that though the fort exists, it does not exist. The reason is that a fort is a lifeless thing, and it is those who guard it who give it life. So security must be not just an object but a habit and a quality.

Commentators take this as the essence of Araniyal. Even if a country has land, people and forts, without the effective action to run them all is vain. In life too we build many forts, health, wealth and learning, but if the effort to use them is lacking they become useless.

A story

The Fall of Lanka

Valmiki's Ramayana tells both the strength and the fall of the city of Lanka. Lanka was surrounded by the sea, set on Mount Trikuta, with high walls and gates. It was a rich city full of golden mansions. It had every kind of fort.

Yet Rama's army entered Lanka. The Ramayana says the vanaras crossed the sea by building a bridge. The natural fort of the sea was broken, and the mountain fort came under siege. The reason was that Ravana, king of Lanka, had violated dharma and abducted Sita.

In Ravana's court, Vibhishana, Mandodari, Malyavan and others gave counsel. They said that returning Sita to Rama would avert war. Ravana did not listen. His arrogance and his trust in his fort shut his ears.

When the war began, many of his warriors fought bravely. But fighting for a wrong cause broke their unity and firmness. Vibhishana went and joined Rama. Kumbhakarna, Indrajit and Ravana fell. The strong fort did not protect them.

This story strongly illustrates the couplet 'however excellent, a fort is nothing in those who lack excellence in action'. Lanka had all the forts, but the king who guarded them lacked dharma and lacked the humility to listen to good counsel. Though the fort existed, it ceased to exist. The lesson reaches every reader. This was the warning to all who rely on walls alone.
