Mahabharata, Vana ParvaKing Shibi and the Dove
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. One day a dove, trembling with fear, fell into the lap of King Shibi. A hawk chasing it said, "That is my prey. Give my hunger its due."
He could not abandon a creature that had sought his protection, nor ignore a hungry hawk. Shibi said, "I will give you my own flesh, equal to the dove's weight." He placed the dove on a scale and cut flesh from his body to set against it. However much he added, the dove's side stayed heavier. At last he sat on the scale himself.
Then the hawk revealed himself as Indra and the dove as Agni, saying they had come to test the king. They made his body whole again and blessed him. Shibi, who sought to do justice to every creature, is oppuravu in living form.
