Aerpathu ikazhssi

Meaning

Begging is a disgrace.

Word by word

receiving, begging
a disgrace

Explanation

Avvaiyar says that living by holding out your hand to others is a disgrace. To beg when one is able to work lowers one's self-respect. To work as one can and stand on one's own feet is dignity.

This is not a word against the poor; it is praise of self-reliance. One who keeps his dignity even in poverty is truly rich.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto

Kuchela Asks for Nothing

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto. Krishna's childhood friend Sudama, also called Kuchela, lived in deep poverty. His wife pleaded, "Your friend is the king of Dvaraka; go and ask him for help."

With a little flattened rice tied in a rag, Sudama went to Dvaraka. Krishna ran to embrace him, washed his feet and honoured him with love. Yet Sudama did not say a single word asking for help. He could not bring himself to hold out his hand, even to his friend.

When he returned home, a mansion stood where his hut had been. Without being asked, Krishna had given him everything. To the one who bore poverty with dignity, the Lord himself came with grace.

To reflect on

In what situation could you stand on your own effort instead of asking?
