Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva (Bhagavad Gita)Arjuna's Despair at Kurukshetra
From the Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva. Before the Kurukshetra war began, Arjuna asked Krishna to halt the chariot between the two armies. Facing him he saw his grandsire Bhishma, his teacher Drona, his kinsmen and friends.
His hands trembled and the Gandiva slipped from his grasp. Saying, "I do not want a kingdom won by killing these," he sat down in the chariot and wept. He was sunk in the delusion of not knowing his duty. He surrendered to Krishna: "I am your disciple; guide me."
Krishna taught him the Bhagavad Gita: the undying self, duty, action without attachment, and devotion. At last Arjuna said, "My delusion is destroyed; my memory has returned. I will do as you say." Where ignorance was dispelled, clarity and strength were born.
